The Simpson County Courthouse can be an imposing sight to an uneducated, poor person. For instance, an older, widowed woman has saved her pennies to do some much-needed improvements on her small home. A slick-talking contractor promises her a mansion, delivers only a patch job, and charges her a king's wage. Where does she go for help? The Mendenhall Ministries' community law office, with Christian legal experts, will take her case on a sliding-fee basis. More than 300 people are assisted yearly. The staff has also trained scores of lay legal counselors in basic social security law, land law, and domestic law.
